iStock_79119457_MEDIUM.jpgExperts believe syphilis is on the rise among gay and bisexual men because they are engaging in unprotected sex with multiple partners, many of whom they met in anonymous situations such as sex clubs, adult bookstores, meetings through the Internet and in bathhouses. This data shows that in the 93 cases involving gay and bisexual men this year, the group reported having 1,225 sexual partners.15 The men could identify only 8 percent of their sexual partners by name, making it difficult, if not impossible, to notify partners to get a checkup and possible treatment for an STI, stated by Dr. Jeffrey Klausner, director of STI prevention for the city Department of Public Health.
