Is Fathers’ Day too political for TV?

For the past 15 years, not-for-profit organisation Dads4Kids has created community service announcements to promote the important role of fathers in our society. These 30 or 60 second videos have been played on Australian television annually as part of our Fathers’ Day celebrations.

For the past 15 years, not-for-profit organisation Dads4Kids has created community service announcements to promote the important role of fathers in our society. These 30 or 60 second videos have been played on Australian television annually as part of our Fathers’ Day celebrations.

However, this year’s video, which featured a father singing a lullaby to his baby, wasn’t shown on television because it was deemed too “political” by our free-to-air regulator, FreeTV Australia, ahead of the same-sex marriage postal ballot.

I’ll repeat that for anyone who didn’t just fall off their chair.

A video of a father singing a lullaby to our children is now too political for Fathers’ Day!

For the record, FreeTV Australia has denied “banning” the ad outright. Rather, they asked Dads4Kids to add an identification tag to the end of the video – just like any other commercial that contains “political matter”.

But the ad is not the slightest bit political. It simply seeks to positively reinforce the role of fathers on a day that celebrates fatherhood.

Dads4Kids released a statement saying it wasn’t their intention to enter the same-sex marriage debate:

It is extraordinary that this is where we have come to as a country; we can no longer celebrate Fathers’ Day without being forced to look at it through the lens of the same-sex marriage debate.

We expect that in speaking up about this that we and those connected to us will be attacked and intimidated, and subject to the same vilification in both mainstream and social media that has been meted out to those who have stuck their head above the parapet on same-sex marriage, despite this not being the purpose of our adverts.

The importance of hard-working fathers who are dedicated to their children cannot be overstated, and this terribly sad situation has got me thinking: would Fathers’ Day itself be under threat if same-sex marriage becomes law?

After all, in Canada, where same-sex marriage has been legal since 2005, we have already seen the words “father” and “mother” replaced with the genderless term “parent” on birth certificates and legislation.

It’s urgent that we win this postal plebiscite and win it decisively – but we need your help to do so.
