The complainants, two lesbian couples, petitioned the United Nations Human Rights Committee to rule that it their human rights were being violated by a refusal by the New Zealand government to allow same-sex marriage. 

iStock_70092785_SMALL.jpgThe Committee ruled that a mere refusal by New Zealand to provide for marriage between homosexual couples, did not violate the human rights of the complainants under articles 16, 17, 23, paragraphs 1 and 2, or 26 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights.
