Video: "Surrogacy in Thailand," SBS The Feed

This short clip from Australian news and current affairs program begins with the story of a same-sex couple from Australia who explain that they needed to go overseas to find a surrogate mother to bear a child for them because Australia prohibits commercial surrogacy.

The program then travels to Thailand to investigate the practice of commercial surrogacy, and discusses the exploitation and even trafficking of women for this purpose. Surrogate mothers are interviewed, and one says that if she had a choice, she would not be a surrogate because of the health effects. She also says that the agencies often do not pay them as much as advertised.

The video is a dramatic juxtaposition of the desire of the Australian couples with the potential of exploitation of women.
